Picture This (1/31/14)

For the second week in a row, I have no idea where this week went!

Somehow I also convinced myself when I wrote the “my favorite things” post that it was supposed to go up on Thursday. Then on Thursday I made dinner for the house and a booze cake with my sister (aka: it didn’t even occur to me to turn my computer on!).

Today, I’m trying something new! Wait for it…. I’m writing a post via iPhone. Hopefully this won’t come out with wonky formatting and autocorrect errors. But it’s better than no post, yeah? Yeah!

Despite my absentmindedness, I still took a couple pictures this week 🙂

Snapchat obsessed. I literally snapchat with 4 people, but I think it’s one of the most fun ways to keep in touch. Especially since 3 of those 4 live ~300 miles away (Mike, Robert, Candice I mean you!)

Goofballs. The five year olds we were hanging out with rubbed off on us a little.

Hung out with another kitten last weekend. Meet Oliver.

Olaf cupcake cake! Seriously, go see Frozen now!

Mugs I ordered from etsy for my far away friends. One was broken 😦

I saw my parents briefly on Sunday, which was a real treat! My mom had a valentine’s day box for me with lots of goodies!

The cake I made last night was a honey spice beer cake. I stumbled across these gems at the six pack shop while looking for honey beer (which I didn’t find- anyone know if it’s a real thing?)

My best friend of 11 years sent me this last week and it made my day!

Has your week been this crazy??

I blame winter. Always.

Throw It Out Thursday #4: Hair

I’ve been meaning to get my hair cut for weeks, but with things being so busy lately, plus my natural tendency toward inertia, I didn’t get around to it until tonight. Because I hate paying 20 bucks just to get my head shaved, I asked my buddy Rob to do it. I figured hey, it’s his birthday tomorrow, and what better gift to give than the privilege of doing me a service?

While it would have been kind of fun to leave it like this, something told me my employer would frown upon it. So, after a trip to Target to show off the new ‘do in public, Rob finished things off.

Throw it out.

Zoo Diaries (Cat vs. Dog edition)

When we first got Godiva and Cinnamon, they were barely over a pound, so initially, when Rascal would play with them, Dana and I had to keep a close eye on the situation to make sure he wasn’t being too rough. Now the cats are big enough to fend for themselves. Cinnamon usually just goes limp when Rascal engages her. Godiva, on the other hand, tends to be the instigator. So now, instead of constantly breaking up their little scuffles (and taking the sides of our respective pets in the debates that often ensued, like drunk Little League parents), we take video and laugh at them instead.

Roll the clip!

As you may have observed after reading Kyle’s post yesterday, it is really freaking cold in Pittsburgh. I’d also like to point out that we’ve gotten no more snow than usual. At least snow makes the cold a little more exciting.

That being said, there hasn’t been a whole lot going on here. The fact that we’re not in full on hibernation mode is a miracle. It was a short week for both of us (heck yes, MLK day) & I started my new rotation which is not in downtown. It’s pretty weird to get in the car and drive somewhere everyday, but I honestly did miss listening to NPR (nerd, I know).

This week consisted of…

A trip to Commonplace Coffee House on Saturday morning while Rascal was getting groomed. I treated myself to a lavender vanilla latte & it was as good as it looks.

Blue Velvet cake making! I had so much fun making this cake- I really can’t remember the last time I made a cake.

Rascal found a hat…

2014-01-18 15.07.11

& It turns out my hat looks good on everyone!

On Sunday we went to the “Hippie Diner” my friend Ryan has been telling me about for a least a year. I didn’t realize he was describing it literally until we got there. The food was incredible!

They also had placemats and Tupperware containers of crayons on every table. Kyle made a masterpiece:

After our massive breakfast of eggs and toast and possibly the best hash brown’s I’ve ever had, I thought it would be a good idea to the bakery (it was a gluttonous Sunday). I’ve been meaning to stop by this bakery for months. I was not disappointed.

Since I had off on Monday, I had scheduled a bunch of appointments. After a doctors appt., a bone scan, and several vitals of drawn blood- Kyle and I double dated at Nicky’s Thai Kitchen. Best Thai I’ve ever had, hands down (not to mention, I totally deserved a treat!).

My Stitch Fix came this week! This was my favorite piece. It was way to expensive and I agonized over it for days before realizing if I was putting so much thought into it I should probably just buy it 🙂

2014-01-21 18.31.45

I followed this car for a while on my drive home. Made me smile, and I had this song stuck in my head for a while.

Rascal gets more camera time because he’s easier to photograph, but she’s my baby. She instigates Rascal into fighting with her constantly & keeps me company every morning (I’m always the first up).

Now we’re driving across the state for Kyle’s niece’s 5th birthday! Fingers crossed traffic isn’t terrible!

Throw It Out Thursday #3: Now is the Winter of Our FUCK YOU WHY IS IT SO COLD

I’m a summer person who lives in Pennsylvania, so I spend a good portion of the year in a climate that I generally find pretty disagreeable. After over a quarter-century, I’ve more or less made my peace with this. And when it became apparent that Dana and I were hitching our wagon to Pittsburgh for at least the next few years, rather than moving somewhere warm like we would prefer (stupid careers), I thought I had resigned myself to a few more cold winters.

This bullshit, though? This is beyond the pale.

My buddy Zach lives in Williston, North Dakota, a frozen wasteland only slightly warmer than the vacuum of space. When he visited here in late October, we were experiencing lower than average temperatures for the early part of fall. He seemed rather amused by our complaints about the chill, repeatedly insisting that it was not cold. And relatively speaking, of course, he was right. But not all of us live on the ice planet Hoth like he does.

If not for the AT-ATs, I’d have a hard time distinguishing between this and my yard.

Well, we didn’t used to, at least.

In the last nine days, the high temperature here in Pittsburgh has been lower than Williston’s every day but one. That doesn’t include the cold snap we had a couple of weeks back, during which we enjoyed a day with 60 degree spread between the high and low. If tomorrow’s forecasts prove accurate, the high here will be 25 motherfucking degrees lower than in America’s answer to Siberia – and it won’t even be the first time it’s happened this month. And yes, weather forecasts beyond the next day or two are notoriously unreliable (TL;DR chaos theory and math is hard), but if there’s truth to be found in what meteorologists are predicting for the next week, by the end of January we’ll have suffered through 13 days that featured a low temp of 10 degrees or lower.

All of which is to say: This winter has sucked some serious ball sack.

I can barely handle a normal winter here, and I’m supposed to deal with Pittsburgh turning into Greenland?

When I’m living on a tropical island someday, I’ll look back at this time in my life and laugh. But until then…

Dear Winter,

Okay. You are cold. We fucking get it.

Not love,

Throw it out.

Good Reads 1/20/14

Hey friends! It’s time for another Good Reads post. Kyle and I read (possibly) too many internet articles. But some of them are pretty damn interesting. Here’s a list of some of the best reads we’ve come across since out last post.

Kyle’s List

I’ve experienced all of these, but especially #2.

We bought a heavy bag for the house, and I’m going to teach Dana how to box. This was a good primer on how to properly punch.

Bill Murray did an AMA. Everything is awesome.

FYI: The link above works on Kyle’s computer but not mine. Please let us know in the comments if it works for you! We’ve had quite a debate about it.

Dana’s List

Because we can always use another reason to love Robert Downey Junior.

I love the array of subjects BuzzFeed covers. This photography project is beautiful.

I made a blue velvet cake for my wonderful friend Eva’s birthday. I’ve never seen cake make so many people so happy. I also now know I want to take a cake decorating class.

I am so sad I’m out of peanut butter because I want this Black Magic Peanut Butter by Chocolate Covered Katie right now!

This article made the vegetarian in me very happy: “I was a Vegetarian for 5 Years & Today I Slaughtered a Chicken”. Unrelated: I learned that Betty White and Thom Yorke are vegan.

What Thom Yorke has to say about the whole veggie thing in general: “There is enough suffering in the world and if you choose to physically ingest it, then you should at least be aware of what you’re doing rather than assuming that that’s your right as a human being to do it.”

Greatist.com was on fire this month. I hate disposable water bottles and have bought maybe three in the last year. This infographic explains exactly how wasteful they are.

Anyone take a cake decorating class this week?

Did you guys read something good this week?

Picture This (1/18/14)

One of the many things I adore about having a pup around is that there is always an excuse to go on a walk. Even when it’s cold (though to be honest, the 30/40 degree weather this week felt like late spring compared to last week’s polar vortex). So Rascal got many walks this week & I took a lot of pictures.

(General randomness also included)

Rascal knows who is really boss.

Last day of rotation. What I will miss most about my time as a “Software Engineer” (LOL) are these mirrored elevator doors.

2014-01-10 12.55.54

Mismatched brick. I bet this is shitty to drive on.

Drawer cat! Usually they’re all about Kyle’s dresser but this week I found her chilling in mine.

2014-01-14 19.30.13

Training at a new-to-me building this week. It’s LEED certified so there are a TON of windows. Oh, and it’s right on the river. (Ryan, I am legitimately jealous you work there every day).

2014-01-16 16.38.01

Rediscovered this cookbook! How could I have forgotten?! Definitely making a lot of booze cakes in the near future.

So tell us, how was your week?!
